<p>During a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex yesterday, 7 February, Shafee claimed that, while Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri&#8217;ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah wanted to grant Najib a full pardon, the then-king opted to conduct a vote among the Pardons Board members to decide on the matter instead﻿, reported <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/695613">Malaysiakini</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;He passed four empty vote papers to the four non-permanent members [of the Pardons Board to indicate their stance on whether to grant a full pardon],&#8221; he said. </p>
<p>Shafee added that he was unaware of the outcome of the vote, but emphasised that it resulted in Najib having his sentence reduced instead of receiving a full pardon.</p>
<p>Shafee then asserted that, &#8220;[A royal] pardon is the sole prerogative of Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He can listen to the advice of the [Pardons Board members] but he shouldn&#8217;t [have held] the vote and [should have] decided on his own [instead].&#8221;</p>

<p><p>During the press conference, Shafee had read out a letter bearing the seal of the former king that showed the Pardons Board&#8217;s recommendation.</p>
<p>&#8220;The announcement [in the letter] is made by someone called YB Dr Zaliha Mustafa [the de facto Federal Territories Minister],&#8221; <a href="https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/695613">Malaysiakini </a>quoted him as saying.</p>
<p>According to Shafee, the letter reads as such:</p>
<p>&#8216;The Pardons Board, following Article 42 of the Federal Constitution, had on 29 January considered the convict&#8217;s sentence and advised the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that he should serve out the rest of his sentence. It is reasonable in His Majesty [the King’s] view, that mercy should be shown to Najib.&#8217;</p>
<p>Consequently, Shafee said the former king used his authority under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution and other powers to decree that Najib&#8217;s jail sentence be halved.</p>
<p>Al-Sultan Abdullah also decreed that Najib&#8217;s fine be reduced to RM50 million, with the stipulation that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional year added to his prison sentence.﻿</p>

<p><p>&#8220;It is unclear if the process of the Pardons Board and the decisions made to it are regular or otherwise,&#8221; he said, claiming that the Pardons Board did not act in accordance with the Federal Constitution.</p>
<p>&#8220;The law clearly states that the royal prerogative of mercy is the sole discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. It is unfettered and non-challengeable in any court,&#8221; the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/crime-courts/2024/02/1010719/updated-najib-submit-new-application-royal-pardon">New Straits Times</a> quoted him as saying.</p>
<p>&#8220;However, many members of the public are somewhat concerned due to the inconsistencies. My client is most baffled. As a result of these unsatisfactory features, we are looking at another application for a full royal pardon,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>Shafee also said that his team would decide when to submit the application, emphasising that they would have sufficient grounds, including some new ones.</p>

<p>After a cabinet reshuffle, Dr Zaliha Mustafa took over the Federal Territories portfolio, representing Anwar in subsequent board meetings. Despite limited attendance, Anwar stayed actively involved in the review process.</p>

<p>According to a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/najibrazak/posts/964394348384837">statement</a>&nbsp;on Najib&#8217;s official Facebook page yesterday, 4 February, members of parliament (MPs), such as Bukit Gelugor MP  Ramkarpal Singh, were accused of having a lack of understanding regarding Najib&#8217;s RM42 million SRC International trial.</p>
<p>This statement was released in response to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/ramkarpal/posts/936376827858404">Ramkarpal&#8217;s Facebook post</a> on 3 February, where the MP urged the Pardons Board to disclose the reasons for commuting Najib&#8217;s sentence, emphasising that Najib committed the offences during his tenure as the head of the government &#8220;with utter disregard for the consequences of his actions to the nation and its people&#8221;.</p>
<p>Najib&#8217;s Facebook page said Ramkarpal had neglected to address the &#8220;numerous irregularities&#8221; in the case and brought up the only dissenting judge&#8217;s quote in last year&#8217;s Federal Court&#8217;s dismissal of Najib&#8217;s application to review his sentence that &#8220;a great injustice has fallen on Najib Razak and the correct decision is to acquit and release him&#8221;. </p>
<p>Ramkarpal was then challenged to a televised open debate on the subject. As the case has come to an end, there is no longer any danger of contempt of court to discuss it publicly.<br />﻿<br />&#8220;We invite Ramkarpal Singh to a televised open debate with a representative from our side on the subject of whether or not Najib deserves a pardon for the SRC case,&#8221; read the Facebook post.</p>

<p>In a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/ramkarpal/posts/937439031085517">statement</a> posted today, 5 February, the MP said that even though his sentence was commuted, the Pardons Board had maintained Najib&#8217;s conviction.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is pointless engaging with Najib on this issue as it is elementary that the majority judgment of the said application prevails. Even the Pardons Board maintained his conviction.</p>
<p>&#8220;As such, any debate, whether with me or anyone else, would not change the fact that Najib remains a convict and that his conviction is safe,&#8221; wrote Ramkarpal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is obvious that Najib wishes to use me to remain relevant by challenging me to this debate. I will not allow myself to be used by this cheap publicity stunt of his,&#8221; he added.</p>

<p>The <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://says.com/my/news/kj-is-now-a-radio-dj-at-hot-fm">radio DJ</a> and <i>Keluar Sekejap</i> co-host said this in response to a question by SAYS at the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://klpodfest.com/">KL PodFest 2024</a>&nbsp;press conference today, 2 February.</p>
<p>&#8220;We would love to have the PM [prime minister] on the show,&#8221; said the 48-year-old. </p>
<p>&#8220;But I think it&#8217;s about timing. I think we&#8217;d love to have a prime minister at some point on [our show].</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a long list of people who we&#8217;d like to interview first, but of course, we&#8217;d love the privilege to interview our prime minister. But the timing is key, and we hope we can get an agreement [with Anwar] at some point, maybe [within] this year,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Khairy mentioned that his team has not extended an official invitation to Anwar for the podcast. However, they have reached out to his office to gauge his interest.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our philosophy is that we want to get all sides [of the political divide] to come on <i>Keluar Sekejap&#8230; </i>We trend at the top in terms of current affairs and political&nbsp;podcasts in the region. So, it&#8217;s not a bad platform [for Anwar] to be on, and we will be fair,&#8221; he added.<i></i></p>

<p>Khairy said the most-viewed <i>Keluar Sekejap</i> episode has over two million viewers on YouTube, and this number does not include listeners from Spotify and other podcast channels.</p>
<p>Both Khairy and Shahril Hamdan ﻿are politicians in exile after being sacked and suspended from UMNO, respectively.</p>

<p><p>According to a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/najibrazak/posts/963269075164031">statement</a> by the board posted on Najib&#8217;s Facebook page, <b>Najib&#8217;s new release date will be on 28 August 2028.</b></p>
<p>His fine has also been reduced <b>from RM210 million to RM50 million.</b></p>
<p>&#8220;However, if the fine is not paid, a year will be added to the jail time for Najib, with the release date being 23 August 2029,&#8221; said the board today, 2 February.</p>
<p>As of today, the former Pekan member of parliament has only served a total of one year and five months in Kajang Prison.</p>

<p>As the King, he serves as the head of state under the nation&#8217;s constitutional monarchy system.</p>
<p>He is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. He is also the head of Islam in the four states ruled by appointed governors, and the three Federal Territories, as well as in his own state.</p>
<p>In the coming five years, the 65-year-old King holds the responsibility of attending pre-Cabinet and Pardons Board meetings, consenting to laws passed by the parliament, as well as visiting and welcoming foreign leaders and monarchs, among other tasks.</p>

<p>Born on 22 November 1958 in Johor Bahru, Sultan Ibrahim has a notable military background, having completed a slew of military training and courses.</p>
<p>He started his journey as a platoon commander during his training days at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, reported the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2024/01/1007901/forged-steel-%E2%80%94-life-sultan-ibrahim">New Straits Times</a>.</p>
<p>Following that, he participated in various training programmes in the US, including specialised courses led by the US Special Forces and the US Army Pathfinder Course. Throughout this period, he completed 19 parachute jumps, with eight of them conducted under the cover of darkness.</p>
<p>Additionally, he&#8217;s a commissioned member of the US Navy SEALs and an honorary member of Indonesia&#8217;s Commando Special Forces.</p>
<p>He also underwent helicopter pilot training with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and engaged in a three-month training programme with the Royal Malaysian Navy in Lumut, Perak.</p>
<p>Beside his military accomplishments, he also completed two academic courses, namely the Southeast Asian Strategic Studies and the International Law of the Sea at Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Tufts University, Boston, reported <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.bernama.com/en/news.php?id=2267123">Bernama</a>.</p>

<p>He became the Sultan of Johor on 23 January 2010 following his father&#8217;s passing, before officially being crowned on 23 March 2015.</p>

<p>As recently as last Sunday, 28 January, he was seen returning to his palace in Johor Bahru in a 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Scat, accompanied by his entourage in a Chevrolet Tahoe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He is also recognised for championing the concept of Bangsa Johor, fostering unity and pride among Johorians.</p>
<p>Prior to his installation as the King today, Sultan Ibrahim said he is committed to eradicating corruption in Malaysia, emphasising the need for independent judicial appointments and direct reporting of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to the King.</p>

The former prime minister is serving a 12-year sentence for corruption.</p>
<p>The Utusan report, however, has since been retracted.</p>
<p>&#8220;Utusan Malaysia has retracted the news about Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak&#8217;s pardon as the facts were not verified. We apologise to readers,&#8221; <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.utusan.com.my/berita/202/01/utusan-tarik-balik-berita-pengampunan-najib/" title="Link: https://www.utusan.com.my/berita/202/01/utusan-tarik-balik-berita-pengampunan-najib/">read a note</a> on the newspaper&#8217;s website, where the story was published.﻿</p>
<p><b>SAYS is unable to independently verify the claim that Najib has been pardoned.</b></p>
<p>There has also been no official statement from the Pardons Board yet.</p>
<p>He was found guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering involving RM42 million that had been siphoned from SRC International, a former 1MBD subsidiary. He was also fined RM210 million.</p>
