<p>In fact, there is a plethora of articles, self-help books, and videos out there that teach you how to build up your savings and avoid dipping into it. Some common tips you&#8217;ll come across include:</p>
<p>&#8211; Setting up a separate bank account for your savings<br />&#8211; Setting up an emergency fund for unexpected expenses<br />&#8211; Setting up a sinking fund for expected expenses (such as gifts, car maintenance, etc)<br />&#8211; Spending only after you save<br />&#8211; Adjusting your budget and cutting expenses<br />&#8211; Picking up side hustles to earn more money</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s the thing: During the first few years I started working, despite earning less, I still managed to save RM100 to RM200 each month, and even up to RM500 in a good month.</p>
<p>I even began employing the &#8216;save before you spend&#8217; method, setting up auto-billing to save a portion of my salary whenever it came in.</p>
<p>The funny thing is that as I progressed in my career, and my salary increased, so did my living expenses. It&#8217;s not like I was splurging on branded items or RM100 meals all the time, but having friends (and a partner) just meant that there were more things to spend on, and I was fine with that.</p>

<h2>As I grew older, I also began to realise there was a lot more adulting that needed to be done — and most of these things cost money</h2>

<p>Whether it was taking a flight back to Penang to see family every other month (RM200), attending friends&#8217; weddings (RM150 per wedding), or paying for car insurance and road tax (RM1,000), there were some months when there just wasn&#8217;t enough money to save, no matter how hard I budgeted.</p>

<p>By then, I had already accumulated a comfortable safety net, or emergency fund, or whatever you want to call it. But I just felt like it was money I should never have to touch.</p>

<h2>The kicker came when I went through three major life changes back to back: Getting married, buying a house, and having a kid</h2>

<p>At each phase, I would still try my very best to budget and track my monthly expenditure meticulously. The only problem was that whenever there was an unforeseen expense, or a meal I had while eating out with friends, I&#8217;d feel super agitated because I felt I was &#8220;overspending&#8221;.</p>
<p>Naturally, I ended up having to dip into my savings and would often feel unhappy.</p>
<p>But then, a very wise person (a.k.a. the wife) one day asked me, <b>&#8220;What&#8217;s the point of you having savings anyway? Isn&#8217;t it so that you have money saved up for unforeseen occasions like this?&#8221;</p>
<p></b>That&#8217;s when my perspective towards savings started to shift, and I became a little more okay to dip into my savings. (But before you overreact, I have an explanation below)<b><br /></b></p>

<h2>First of all, I&#8217;m not saying you should be dipping into your savings for whatever you want or splurging all the time just because you can</h2>

<p>Behaving like this is dumb, and you&#8217;ll end up not having anything saved up for when you really need it.</p>
<p>But what I am saying is that it&#8217;s okay to dip into your savings for specific occasions or seasons of your life. And however much you want to dip into is entirely based on what&#8217;s important to you.</p>
<p>For instance, nowadays, I wouldn&#8217;t mind forking out RM500 on a big family dinner to celebrate a parent&#8217;s birthday or a family member&#8217;s milestone because, family is important to me. Or, if my wife and I need to dip into our savings every month to pay for our kid&#8217;s daycare — we&#8217;d do it because it gives us the time and space for our careers, which is something we both value.</p>

<p>Back to the example of daycare, what I did was to take out a sum from my savings and say, &#8220;This is the amount I&#8217;m allocating for the year<b> towards this specific purpose</b>&#8220;, and I was okay with it.</p>
<p>Another thing that shifted my perspective was <b>understanding that everything is for a season</b>. I know that I won&#8217;t be earning the same salary forever, and I know that I won&#8217;t be paying for daycare forever either. Recognising that there are seasons that are more financially demanding than others has taught me to be kinder to myself.</p>

<p><p>Like organisations worldwide, many in Malaysia are eager to harness the advantages of this year&#8217;s most thrilling technology —&nbsp;AI. As with many emerging technologies, AI&#8217;s dual nature as both a tool and a potential threat will become more pronounced in the social dimension of cyberattacks, expected to unfold in 2024. </p>
<p>Of the many AI tools available, generative AI will likely stand out as a potent tool for attackers, enabling impersonation and identity theft tactics. For example, attackers are already cleverly combining AI tools like chatbots and voice clones to create multifaceted threats like virtual kidnapping. </p>
<p>By leveraging AI technologies, <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/us/security/news/cybercrime-and-digital-threats/how-cybercriminals-can-perform-virtual-kidnapping-scams-using-ai-voice-cloning-tools-and-chatgpt">virtual kidnapping</a> uses misinformation to deceive victims into paying a ransom in exchange for a &#8220;kidnapped&#8221; loved one. In a disturbing trend that has trapped many Malaysians, <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://sea.mashable.com/life/28312/the-online-scam-waves-that-hit-malaysia-never-died-down-and-they-probably-will-not-anytime-soon">fraudsters are defrauding victims</a> under the guise of job offers and investment plans. </p>
<p>Similarly, AI-enabled deepfakes (a portmanteau of &#8220;deep learning&#8221; and &#8220;fake&#8221;) cannot be both cheap and convincing for attackers. Hence, it’s more likely that voice cloning will be used in near-future scams and in a targeted way, rather than in volume-based attacks. </p>
<p>In 2024, we&#8217;ll also see continued debate around AI regulations and safety. Global regulatory bodies are proactively responding to the advancements in technology, with recent legislation emerging in China and anticipated regulations from the European Union. </p>
<p>There are growing calls for an international summit focused on AI regulations as well. In the meantime, policymakers are exploring ways to leverage existing data protection laws to address AI misuse. </p>
<p>The Malaysian government is actively working towards introducing the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://themalaysianreserve.com/2023/11/24/malaysia-launches-cybersecurity-strategy-amids-growing-threats/">Cybersecurity Bill</a> and reinforcing its defences through the Malaysian Cyber Security Strategy to combat evolving cyber threats. </p>
<p>However, as these regulations are still in the pipeline, adopting a zero-trust approach becomes crucial for defenders to safeguard against social engineering scams, particularly those exploiting convincing deepfakes.</p>

<p>As dependence on the cloud increases, organisations in Malaysia must remain watchful for emerging vulnerabilities and threats linked to it. In 2024, an increase in worms that will be tailored to exploit cloud-native platforms and technologies is anticipated.</p>
<p>This risk extends to all organisations, irrespective of their maturity in cloud adoption, as &#8220;living off the cloud&#8221; attacks become more prevalent. More specifically, attacks in Kubernetes environments will become more automated and specialised.</p>
<p>Why will organisations need to brace themselves for worms in 2024? </p>
<p>Firstly, worms are capable of rapid propagation in cloud environments, especially through misconfigurations in APIs. This is because <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.trendmicro.com/en_us/devops/22/i/cloud-configuration-errors-fixes.html">cloud misconfigurations</a> serve as easy entry points for attackers, due to their overly complicated infrastructures, configuration drift, and improperly configured development environments. </p>
<p>Secondly, attackers can use compromised environments as a stepping stone to infect others. </p>
<p>Thirdly, cybercriminals will be able to scale up and automate their attacks, which is ideal for large-scale attacks on cloud environments. </p>
<p>Thus, organisations&#8217; security posture must proactively scan their cloud environments in search of potential worm attacks and practice zero trust where possible. &nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2024, cloud-based ML faces a growing threat known as data poisoning, where attackers manipulate the data used to train models. </p>
<p>Defenders face challenges as these models draw data from diverse sources like third-party data lakes and federated learning systems. Threat actors can orchestrate attacks during data collection or compromise a model&#8217;s storage and pipeline infrastructure. </p>
<p>Specialised models with focused data are particularly vulnerable compared to larger language models and generative AI models with extensive data. </p>

Recent observations, with a forecast into the next year, indicate a significant shift in the cybercriminals landscape, as groups increasingly collaborate and form alliances.</p>
<p>Notably, connections between entities like Royal and the emerging player Mimic with the larger Conti ransomware group have emerged. Such collaborations are becoming increasingly popular as they lead to lower costs and expanded market presence while maintaining criminal effectiveness. </p>
<p>Another noteworthy trend involves the strategic targeting of vulnerabilities in Internet-facing servers or those hosting critical business information.</p>
<p>An illustrative example is the Clop ransomware group&#8217;s exploitation of the MOVEit data transfer service, particularly against government agencies, indicating an advanced understanding of software running on services and a preference for targeting vulnerabilities with less lateral movement.</p>
<p>To stay ahead of these evolving threats, organisations must adopt proactive strategies, including a risk-based approach, to identify and disrupt potential intrusions upstream in the kill chain. </p>
<p>This proactive stance not only enhances threat visibility but also empowers organisations to detect malicious behaviour before encryption, improving the likelihood of successful prevention.</p>
<p>Advanced unified cybersecurity platforms equipped with sophisticated Extended Detection and Response (XDR) capabilities play a crucial role, providing businesses with comprehensive visibility to understand, communicate, and mitigate risks across the entire attack surface.</p>

<p>Sex education teaches the anatomy and physiology of sex. It also involves discussions about human sexuality, sexually transmitted illnesses, and pregnancy (including how to avoid unwanted pregnancies).</p>
<p>We can see how important sex education is whenever instances occur whereby teachers openly joke about rape in front of their students. Rape and sexual harassment are serious problems that should never be taken lightly, much less joked about during sex education programmes.</p>
<p>It is incidents like this that make teaching staff and parents wary about allowing their children to learn about sex at a young age in school.</p>

<p>Many teachers fear that inaccurate delivery of sex education would do the students more harm than good. Additionally, there is also the problem of lack of preparation amongst teachers, which results in students not taking sex education seriously.</p>
<p>The biggest concern for teachers is that in this age of instant access to knowledge, students are more likely to believe what they learn outside the classroom. This causes teachers to find it challenging to properly educate students about sex.</p>
<p>However, students may not receive accurate or comprehensive information about sex via alternative sources, which can lead to misunderstandings, confusion, and even wrongdoings.</p>
<p>For instance, students may be more likely to get sexually transmitted infections (STIs) if they are not taught the necessity of safe sex. Without proper sex education, teenagers may engage in harmful behaviour, from underage sexual activity to rape.﻿</p>

<p>Another common concern for parents is that&nbsp;sex education will contradict their family&#8217;s values or religious beliefs. Parents who have strong religious or moral values may be unwilling to expose their children to ideas that contradict their beliefs.</p>
<p>This issue is related to some sex education measures that employ fear-based methods to scare students away from sex, such as demonstrating unsuitable graphic images or highlighting the consequences of teen pregnancy.</p>
<p>This approach is susceptible to failure, as it tends to make students feel scared, discouraged, and ashamed to study more about sex in the future.</p>

<p>As a result, Malaysia must make comprehensive preparations, particularly in the area of education. In order to reduce the rate of sexual crimes in our country, not only is community acceptance of sex education very important, public awareness of it also needs to be increased.</p>
<p>Parents and teachers must be made aware to the numerous advantages to being taught about sex at a young age. This includes reducing the occurrence of harmful sexual behaviour, such as having unprotected sexual activity with numerous partners or having sex while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.</p>
<p>Ultimately, learning about sex might help students have a healthier lifestyle, as well as happier sexual relationships later in life. Sex education as early as school level is also very helpful as an early deterrent against sexual offences, which continue to increase.</p>
