<h2>A Malaysian former flight attendant is suing Singapore Airlines (SIA) for SGD1.78 million (RM6.3 million), after he slipped and fell during a flight</h2>

<p>Durairaj Santiran claims he slipped and fell on a patch of grease in the economy-class galley while working onboard a flight from San Francisco to Singapore on 6 September 2019, as reported by <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/ex-air-steward-who-slipped-on-grease-patch-and-fell-on-plane-sues-sia-for-178m" title="Link: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/ex-air-steward-who-slipped-on-grease-patch-and-fell-on-plane-sues-sia-for-178m">The Straits Times</a>.</p>
<p>He said that he hit his head on the floor and suffered injuries to his spine, rendering him medically unfit to continue working as a flight attendant.</p>
<p>The 35-year-old was previously employed by SIA from April 2016 to April 2021, and now works in Malaysia as a customer care analyst. </p>
<p>He is seeking damages including SGD1.29 million (RM4.5 million) for loss of future earnings, SGD30,000 (RM106,000) for loss of earning capacity, and SGD150,000 (RM531,000) for future medical and transport expenses.</p>
</p>
<p>Durairaj wore a neck brace when he attended court yesterday, 13 February, the first day of a 10-day trial.</p>

<p>Representing Durairaj were lawyers&nbsp;Ramasamy Chettiar and Kasturibai Manickam, who contended that the floor of the galley was slippery and therefore unsafe. </p>
<p>They further argued that SIA did not take any preventive measures, allowing the workplace to be unsafe.</p>
<p>SIA denied Durairaj&#8217;s claims.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the airline&#8217;s lawyers, Niru Pillai and Liew Teck Huat, said in their opening statement that SIA pays all valid and legitimate claims made by employees, but responds &#8220;firmly&#8221; to invalid, illegitimate, and false claims. </p>
<p>&#8220;The defendant treats this as a highly questionable claim, which they are obliged to contest resolutely,&#8221; said SIA&#8217;s lawyers.</p>

<h2>In 2017 and 2018, Durairaj made two work injury claims, which the airline did not contest</h2>

<p>He was awarded compensation for back and neck injuries through the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA) process.</p>
<p>However, in the present case, SIA noted that no one else had slipped or fallen on the alleged grease patch, supposedly located near the ovens next to the galley island. The company also disputed Durairaj&#8217;s claim that he slipped and fell while in the midst of preparing the next meal as the time for meals had not yet started.</p>
<p>While taking the stand, Durairaj said he noticed the grease patch after the cleaning crew left and had tried to clean it before takeoff, but the floor was still slippery.</p>
<p>SIA&#8217;s lawyers challenged his account, suggesting that his claim of slipping due to a patch of grease was fabricated.</p>
<p>Durairaj disagreed.</p>

<h2>A woman has been arrested for allegedly misusing her boarding pass to enter Changi Airport&#8217;s transit area just to meet a K-pop group</h2>

<p>According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/woman-arrested-after-entering-changi-airport-s-transit-area-to-meet-k-pop-idol">The Straits Times</a>, the 25-year-old woman had allegedly bought a flight ticket with the sole purpose of entering the airport transit area, and had no intention of flying.</p>
<p>Reports believe that the unnamed woman wanted to meet K-pop group ENHYPEN. The seven-member boy band had performed two shows in Singapore on 20 and 21 January. The woman was arrested in the airport on 22 January.</p>
<p>Details of the incident were released by police yesterday, 8 February.</p>

<p>A protected place is an area where officials take special precautions and added security, in order to control the movement of people for public safety reasons.</p>
<p>If found guilty, the woman may face a fine of up to SGD20,000 (RM70,900), a jail term of up to two years, or both.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those who make use of boarding passes to enter the transit areas for reasons other than to travel out of Singapore will be detected and arrested,&#8221; the police said, as reported by <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/woman-misuse-boarding-pass-k-pop-idol-transit-changi-airport-police-4110366">Channel News Asia</a>.</p>
<p>Police investigations are ongoing.</p>

<p>The unnamed headmaster admitted to paying 110 yen (RM3.50) for the regular cup, then pouring himself the larger 180 yen (RM5.70) option, starting from June, according to reports by Yomiuri TV.</p>
<p>In December, a vigilant store clerk caught him in the act and called the police as the headmaster tried to leave.</p>
<p>The headmaster later admitted that the first time he poured a large coffee into his regular cup, it was an accident. He would go on to pour extra coffee for himself at the self-service machine seven times that year, knowing that it was wrong.</p>

<h2>An elderly couple in China has been evicted from their home by their own son and daughter-in-law, igniting widespread outrage on mainland social media</h2>

<p>Jin and his wife, both in their 80s, had been living in their flat since the 1990s when it was allocated to the couple by the university where Jin worked.</p>
<p>Following an operation a few years ago, Jin&#8217;s son and daughter-in-law began pressuring him to transfer the property to their son. &#8220;The flat would go to my son and grandson in the end, so I did not think they would do anything terrible to me before I died,&#8221; Jin told reporters.</p>
<p>The value of this ownership transfer amounted to a substantial 1.05 million yuan (approximately RM697,000). However, Jin&#8217;s son didn&#8217;t pay for anything. </p>
<p>&#8220;The ownership went straight to my grandson,&#8221; Jin added. At the time, he believed that he and his wife would continue to live in the flat, and their grandson would inherit it when they passed away.</p>

<p>Last year, Jin&#8217;s son announced that he would be selling the flat to buy a villa for himself. Shocked at his son&#8217;s decision, Jin pleaded for him to reconsider but was allegedly met with verbal abuse. </p>
<p>As the tenant&#8217;s lease had ended, Jin and his wife attempted to move back into their home, only to find that the locks had been changed. That night, with nowhere else to go, the couple slept on the cold floor outside their flat.</p>
<p>Furthermore, all the rental income from the flat had gone straight to Jin&#8217;s son, with the elderly couple not seeing a penny.</p>
