<p>The Japanese billionaire died in Hiroshima on 12 February, according to a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.daiso-sangyo.co.jp/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Notice_HP.pdf">statement</a> from his company on 19 February.</p>
<p>A private funeral was held by his close friends and family members.</p>

<p><p>On the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.k-eta.go.kr/">official K-ETA website</a>, the ministry warns that <b>it has</b> <b>not designated any other agency for K-ETA application.</b></p>
<p>&#8220;Some non-official websites were found to be <b>illegally collecting a higher fee</b> than the official fee and relevant cases have been reported.</p>
<p>&#8220;Please be careful to protect yourself from damages due to fraudulent non-official K-ETA websites and agencies,&#8221; it warned.</p>
<p>According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2024/02/18/korean-travel-drama-a-costly-affair">The Star</a>, many unsuspecting Malaysians have also fallen victim to this scam.</p>

<h2>Over the last decade, the enrolment of non-Chinese students, particularly Malay students, in Chinese vernacular schools has steadily increased, climbing from 9.5% in 2010 to 15.33% in 2020</h2>

<p>The Education Ministry provided data in a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/550573">parliamentary reply</a> on 10 November 2020, revealing a 6.18% increase in Malay students at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKCs) nationwide during that period.</p>
<p>However, the ministry also highlighted that the proportion of Malay students enrolled at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) or national schools has remained stable, hovering at around 93 to 94% from 2010 to 2020.</p>

<p>Vernacular schools are also perceived to offer many advantages over national schools, such as better facilities, a more dedicated and organised alumni network, and a strong focus on mastering Mandarin and English.</p>
<p>Many parents are also drawn to the strong academic reputation of these institutions.</p>

<p>And Mandarin, with its burgeoning economic power, offers exciting career prospects. Vernacular schools provide an immersive environment for mastering this language, thereby giving students a competitive edge.</p>
<p>According to National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) deputy president Abd Ghani Zainudin, the number of Malay students studying in vernacular schools in Negeri Sembilan has increased significantly.</p>
<p>&#8220;[The parents] see children studying in vernacular schools as having advantages compared to national schools, especially in terms of mastering Mandarin,&#8221; he was <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2024/02/1015202/more-malay-parents-choose-enrol-their-children-vernacular-schools">quoted</a> as saying by the New Straits Times.</p>
<p>Malaysian Muslim Teachers Association (i-Guru) president Mohd Azizee Hassan also echoed similar sentiments, saying, &#8220;Parents now see Malaysia as a pluralistic country&#8230; they also want their children to learn other languages for economic and future career purposes.&#8221;</p>

<p>In addition to language, parents are attracted to the well-equipped infrastructure and organised alumni support found in many vernacular schools in the country. These factors contribute to a conducive learning environment, fostering better engagement and potentially leading to improved academic performance.</p>
<p>&#8220;Vernacular schools&#8230; [have] advantages in terms of fundraising for the school and student development&#8230; most vernacular school alumni&#8230; are seen to be more determined and better organised,&#8221; noted Abd Ghani.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some Malay students who studied in Chinese schools could master English and Mandarin better because generally, both languages are the mediums of instruction in these schools,&#8221; Rafizah Cian Ling Abdullah, a Malay parent who sent her child to an SJKC, told the English daily.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, national school teacher Che Wan Rosida Wan Hasan said she deliberately chose to send her children to a vernacular school.</p>
<p>&#8220;I feel this can have a great impact on attitude, thinking, and increased learning diligence. The advantage of children studying in vernacular schools can help them master Mandarin and English well because both languages are the mediums of instruction in such schools,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>She emphasised that her personal experience in witnessing her children&#8217;s performance and achievements in school was commendable and on par with other students.</p>

<p><p>According to the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2024/02/1015196/tragedy-strikes-eight-year-old-girls-toes-caught-escalator-shopping-mall">New Straits Times</a>, the eight-year-old girl was at the mall with her mother when the incident occurred at 4.45pm.</p>
<p>A video of the incident, allegedly recorded at Setapak Central Mall, was circulated on social media. It showed the young girl being comforted by her mother while firemen try to free her leg.</p>

<h2>A Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said they received an emergency call about the incident at 4.56pm</h2>

<p><p>A team from Setapak station was deployed to the scene, where the five-member squad immediately began working to free the girl&#8217;s foot from the escalator.</p>
<p>&#8220;The firemen together with the building management took about 30 to 40 minutes to successfully free her leg,&#8221; said operations commander PBK II Shamsul Bahri Hashim.</p>
<p>He added that the injured girl was referred to a medical team, who was also on standby at the scene to provide emergency treatment.</p>
<p>It is said one of the girl&#8217;s toes was fractured while another two were injured.</p>
<p>SAYS has reached out to the shopping mall for comment, but has yet to receive a reply.</p>

<p>The establishment of the passport office in Kota Kinabalu would be achieved without the need for additional staff hiring. Instead, personnel for the new office will be sourced through transfers from the Immigration Department headquarters, ensuring efficient resource allocation.</p>

<p>She couldn&#8217;t put weight on her injured leg as she had to recover from surgeries involving metal rods to stabilise her bone.</p>

<p>Speaking to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.hmetro.com.my/utama/2024/02/1061913/maafkan-saya-bang-isteri-gagal-selamatkan-suami">Harian Metro</a>, Nora Elina said she was playing with her two daughters in the sand on the beach when the incident occurred last Friday, 16 February.</p>
<p>At around 11.20am, she noticed Zulkarnain struggling to stay afloat after being swept away by strong waves.</p>
<p>&#8220;Forgive me, <i>abang</i>. I swam desperately, trying to reach you from 5m off the shore,&#8221; she said after the incident.</p>
<p>&#8220;We threw a lifebuoy towards Zulkarnain as I swam towards him to rescue him.</p>
<p>&#8220;But as I approached, the strong current separated us further, forcing me to retreat to the shore,&#8221; she told reporters at the scene.</p>

<p>The SAR efforts are being carried out jointly by the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency, the police, and the Fire and Rescue Department, reported <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.mstar.com.my/lokal/semasa/2024/02/19/lelaki-dikhuatiri-lemas-di-pantai-operasi-sar-disambung-pagi-ini-isteri-minta-maaf-gagal-selamatkan-suami">mStar</a>.</p>

<p>An official said that based on current movements, the victim might have been washed to the left of the Terengganu river mouth.</p>
