<p>The event served as a platform to introduce the educational resource, which features step-by-step instructions and accompanying video content accessible through QR codes, emphasising the importance of informed actions during health emergencies.</p>
<p>Collaborating with Sunway Medical Centre Children&#8217;s Emergency Department and with SunMed Kid&#8217;s Club, the event attracted parents and their children for a day filled with enjoyable and educational activities.</p>

<p>Various stations were set up, each led by dedicated doctors from Sunway Medical Centre (SMC), Sunway City, and Sunway Medical Centre, Velocity, providing hands-on demonstrations on responding to health emergencies such as choking, resuscitation, and fractures.</p>
<p>Attendees actively engaged in learning these life-saving techniques by practising on dolls, which infusing an element of playfulness into the educational process.</p>

<p>With 23 specialised fields in paediatric care, including in areas such as hemato-oncology, intensive care, endocrinology, cardiology, rheumatology, nephrology, gastroenterology, dermatology, and neonatology, SMC is fully equipped and ready to meet all paediatric healthcare needs.</p>
<p>The facilities include a dedicated Children&#8217;s Emergency Department, a paediatric radiology department with 3-tesla MRI, as well as HDU, ICU, operating theatre, and wards for paediatric patients.</p>

<p>&#8220;The rise in incidents, particularly after extended weekends or school holidays, is a cause for growing concern. Based on my experience, I&#8217;ve noticed the challenges parents face when dealing with injuries or even medical conditions in their children. Many are uncertain about when to seek help at the hospital for their kids. Additionally, they may lack clarity on the initial steps to take before arriving at the children&#8217;s emergency department,&#8221; said Dr Borhan.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our launch of the Paediatric First Aid Ebook aims to address this knowledge gap, providing practical insights on administering crucial care at home before reaching the hospital. This resource is designed to help parents recognise emergencies that require immediate attention and guidance.&#8221;</p>

<p><p>In a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/SimTzeTzin.MP/posts/pfbid06FM8FgZ1xqQbGivGTwrPRGkSctMq19AAFwrDatevdtEMFZYLcjZyJt6ec5on3hZ4l">Facebook post</a> on 14 February, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin <b>expressed his concern over the latest birth rate and marriage statistics released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).</b></p>
<p>&#8220;I got curious, why are so few Chinese babies born? So, I used my Chinese New Year spare time to dig a little deeper,&#8221; he wrote.</p>
<p>The MP found that&nbsp;<b>only 40,000 Chinese Malaysian babies were born</b>&nbsp;compared to the total of 423,124 live births in the country in 2022.</p>
<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s less than 10% of total live births!&#8221; he said.</p>

<h2>Sim added that the DOSM statistics show a stark difference in General Marriage Rates (GMR) between Muslims and non-Muslims</h2>

<p><p>&#8220;When I looked at DOSM&#8217;s latest statistics, I found out Chinese Malaysian not only have less babies, they have less marriages too! Double shock!&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>He stated that according to DOSM, approximately 61 marriages occurred per 1,000 Muslim Malaysians, whereas&nbsp;only 22 marriages occurred per 1,000 non-Muslims in 2021.</p>
<p>He concluded that<b> Muslims are 2.7 times more likely to get married compared to non-Muslims.</b></p>
<p>&#8220;So, we can summarise that <b>more and more Chinese or non-Muslim populations are staying single or not getting married.</b></p>
<p>&#8220;This will directly impact the birth rates of Chinese or non-Muslims. Less marriages, less babies,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p><p>According to the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/crime-courts/2024/02/1008387/hospital-staff-leaves-behind-daughter-car-five-year-old-girl-dies">New Straits Times</a>, Shah Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the police were informed of the incident by a medical officer at the hospital at 8pm the same day.</p>
<p>He said preliminary investigations found that the victim was left by her mother in the car by accident, after she was picked up from a nearby daycare centre at about 2pm.</p>
<p>&#8220;The victim was asleep in the car and the engine was turned off. The 34-year-old mother, who is also a hospital staff, only realised that she had left the child behind after her husband contacted her at 6pm.</p>
<p>&#8220;The unconscious victim was then taken to the hospital&#8217;s Emergency Department and efforts to resuscitate her failed. She was confirmed dead by the medical officers there,&#8221; Mohd Iqbal said in a statement today, 1 February.</p>

<p>The investigation is being conducted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act for negligence﻿, reported <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2024/02/01/child-dies-after-being-left-in-parked-car-at-shah-alam-hospital">The Star</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;We advise the public to be more careful after fetching their children from school or daycare centres to prevent accidentally leaving them in vehicles,&#8221; added Mohd Iqbal.</p>
<p>He urged anyone with information on the case to contact investigating officer Insp Syer Aidid at +6013-6544996.</p>

<p><p>The <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://iku.gov.my/nhms">finding</a> is concerning as a paediatric specialist is pointing out that <b>height is one of many indicators of the overall health of the country&#8217;s citizens.</b></p>
<p>In a recent interview with <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.bharian.com.my/berita/nasional/2024/01/1200775/selangor-paling-ramai-budak-bantut">Berita Harian</a>, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) paediatric endocrinology consultant Associate Professor Dr Azriyanti Anuar Zaini said the prevalence of stunting among Malaysian children has been increasing since 2015.</p>
<p><b>&#8220;The rising rate of stunting clearly indicates that this issue, although already highlighted in national data, has not been comprehensively addressed,&#8221;</b> she said.</p>
<p>She further explained that a population experiencing stunted growth is often assumed to be a result of inadequate healthcare facilities, unhealthy eating habits, and living&nbsp;in an unsupportive environment, all of which can adversely impact the country&#8217;s image.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want our future generations to be taller than now, not shorter,&#8221; she added.</p>

<p><p>Many parents, she explained, believe that their children&#8217;s height is not a critical issue, attributing it to their own shorter stature. Consequently, they may not be aware that their child&#8217;s development does not align with their age.</p>
<p>However, Dr Azriyanti emphasised that if&nbsp;the issue is not addressed early, the problem could persist, leading children to remain stunted into adolescence and adulthood.</p>
<p>&#8220;Most cases of stunting among children, especially those under five years old, are caused by nutritional deficiencies. This issue is also closely related to behavioural problems, as found in picky eaters or autism,&#8221; she explained.</p>

<p><p>&#8220;The crucial issue here lies in<b>&nbsp;the parents&#8217; understanding of the types of foods suitable for growing children.</b> In Malaysia, children consume more rice and noodles, compared to animal protein. The intake of milk is also significantly low, as reported in the 2017 national survey, with 75% of teenagers not consuming adequate amounts of milk or dairy products,&#8221; she highlighted.</p>
<p>Dr Azriyanti also said <b>children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep a day</b> to ensure the proper release of growth hormones during deep sleep.</p>
<p>Additionally, <b>gravity-based exercise activities</b> such as running, walking, jump rope, and badminton are crucial for stimulating a child&#8217;s bone development.</p>

<p><p>&#8220;Parents should promptly bring their children to see a doctor if they are significantly shorter than their siblings [when they were the same age] or their peers,&#8221; she advised.</p>
<p>&#8220;If uncertain, consult a specialist because even if the parents are short, it doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean their children will be stunted. Do away with the &#8216;it doesn&#8217;t matter&#8217; attitude and be more concerned about the growth of our children,&#8221; she added.</p>
