<h2>Over the last decade, the enrolment of non-Chinese students, particularly Malay students, in Chinese vernacular schools has steadily increased, climbing from 9.5% in 2010 to 15.33% in 2020</h2>

<p>The Education Ministry provided data in a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/550573">parliamentary reply</a> on 10 November 2020, revealing a 6.18% increase in Malay students at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKCs) nationwide during that period.</p>
<p>However, the ministry also highlighted that the proportion of Malay students enrolled at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) or national schools has remained stable, hovering at around 93 to 94% from 2010 to 2020.</p>

<p>These include the desire for their children to learn Mandarin, the comprehensive facilities provided by vernacular schools, and the improved quality of teaching and learning.</p>
<p>Vernacular schools are also perceived to offer many advantages over national schools, such as better facilities, a more dedicated and organised alumni network, and a strong focus on mastering Mandarin and English.</p>
<p>Many parents are also drawn to the strong academic reputation of these institutions.</p>

<p>Parents recognise the value of multilingualism in a globalised world.</p>
<p>And Mandarin, with its burgeoning economic power, offers exciting career prospects. Vernacular schools provide an immersive environment for mastering this language, thereby giving students a competitive edge.</p>
<p>According to National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) deputy president Abd Ghani Zainudin, the number of Malay students studying in vernacular schools in Negeri Sembilan has increased significantly.</p>
<p>&#8220;[The parents] see children studying in vernacular schools as having advantages compared to national schools, especially in terms of mastering Mandarin,&#8221; he was <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2024/02/1015202/more-malay-parents-choose-enrol-their-children-vernacular-schools">quoted</a> as saying by the New Straits Times.</p>
<p>Malaysian Muslim Teachers Association (i-Guru) president Mohd Azizee Hassan also echoed similar sentiments, saying, &#8220;Parents now see Malaysia as a pluralistic country&#8230; they also want their children to learn other languages for economic and future career purposes.&#8221;</p>

<p>In addition to language, parents are attracted to the well-equipped infrastructure and organised alumni support found in many vernacular schools in the country. These factors contribute to a conducive learning environment, fostering better engagement and potentially leading to improved academic performance.</p>
<p>&#8220;Vernacular schools&#8230; [have] advantages in terms of fundraising for the school and student development&#8230; most vernacular school alumni&#8230; are seen to be more determined and better organised,&#8221; noted Abd Ghani.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some Malay students who studied in Chinese schools could master English and Mandarin better because generally, both languages are the mediums of instruction in these schools,&#8221; Rafizah Cian Ling Abdullah, a Malay parent who sent her child to an SJKC, told the English daily.</p>

<p>According to Mohd Azizee, the improved quality of teaching and learning (PnP) in science and mathematics has motivated parents to choose vernacular schools over SKs for their children.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, national school teacher Che Wan Rosida Wan Hasan said she deliberately chose to send her children to a vernacular school.</p>
<p>&#8220;I feel this can have a great impact on attitude, thinking, and increased learning diligence. The advantage of children studying in vernacular schools can help them master Mandarin and English well because both languages are the mediums of instruction in such schools,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>She emphasised that her personal experience in witnessing her children&#8217;s performance and achievements in school was commendable and on par with other students.</p>

<p>While the range of time zones was previously called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), it is now referred to as Coordinated Universal Time or Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). The different time zones are all abbreviated as UTC, with a + or &#8211; symbol and a number indicating how many hours ahead or behind it is from the universal time of UTC+0.</p>
<p>For example, Malaysia&#8217;s time zone is called Malaysian Standard Time, which is eight hours ahead of UTC+0.</p>
<p>So, Malaysia is under the UTC+8 time zone, as is Singapore, Brunei, and Hong Kong, as well as some parts of Indonesia and Australia.</p>

<p><p>When British North Borneo (now Sabah) and Sarawak were under British rule, they operated on a different time zone from Peninsular Malaysia. <b>Back then, East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) was 30 minutes ahead of Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia).&nbsp;</b></p>
<p>This time difference had negative impacts on work hours in both sides of Malaysia. Yet, the practice continued until 1981.</p>

<h2>On 1 January 1982, Malaysia decided to unify its time zones, bringing Peninsular Malaysia into the Malaysian Standard Time zone (UTC+8)</h2>

<p><p>Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was prime minister at the time, introduced the Malaysian Standard Time Act in 1981, which required advancing the clocks by 30 minutes at 11.30pm on 31 December 1981 to follow East Malaysia. Consequently, New Year&#8217;s celebrations commenced earlier than usual that year.</p>
<p>This move aimed to simplify administration and facilitate communication and coordination between different regions of the country. Singapore followed suit the same day.</p>
<p>According to Tun Mahathir, <b>East Malaysian time was chosen because it was more in line with international practice</b>, where the difference between time zones was one full hour rather than 30 minutes.</p>
<p>This is why Malaysia and Singapore are one hour ahead of Thailand, despite roughly being on the same longitude.</p>

<p><b>Fun fact:</b> If we look at history,<b> </b>Malaysia&#8217;s time zone has actually been changed six times <b></b>prior to that last change in 1981, reported <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://cilisos.my/guess-how-many-timezones-malaysia-had-before-finally-having-one-standard-time/">Cilisos</a>. </p>
<p>This is due to various factors, including colonisation. Malaysia&#8217;s time zone adjustments were influenced by the colonial powers that ruled during that specific time, such as the British and Japanese administrations.</p>

<h2>Decades later, some Malaysians feel that the country should return to its previous time zone, UTC+7, for geographical and practical reasons</h2>

<p><p>They argue that aligning Malaysia&#8217;s time zone with its neighbouring countries would facilitate smoother communication, trade, and travel. It could also reduce confusion and logistical challenges arising from differences in time zones.</p>
<p>Other Malaysians argue that being on UTC+7 would better match the country&#8217;s natural daylight hours, leading to increased productivity and improved work-life balance. This alignment could enhance energy efficiency and contribute to overall well-being (and better sleep!).</p>
<p>This is because being in the UTC+8 time zone means that those who live in Peninsular Malaysia start their mornings later than the rest of the countries within the blue section of the time zone map shown earlier. </p>
<p>So, if you live in Peninsular Malaysia, your natural body clock is out of sync with the sunrise, which is why switching to UTC+7 could lead to better sleep.</p>
