<h2>Kedai Runcit Abdul Wahet never fails to spread festive cheer in the small town of Kuching, Sarawak</h2>

<p><p>The grocery store, located right next to Kuching city&#8217;s main mosque along Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, has been putting up decorations every Chinese New Year for more than 20 years.</p>
<p>Its owner, Fazan Abdul Wahet, told <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://dayakdaily.com/muslim-owned-grocery-shop-continues-family-tradition-of-putting-up-cny-decoration-since-1978/">Dayak Daily </a>that he is simply continuing his family&#8217;s tradition of joining in the festivities.</p>
<p>The 63-year-old said he remembers when his family first decorated their shop with two small homemade Chinese lanterns to celebrate Chinese New Year in 1978.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those days, we just wanted to be a part of the festival, and some family members would find time to make the decorations and to create the festival atmosphere. It was always fun for all of us,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p><p>&#8220;I am of Indian-Bidayuh parentage. Since we are of mixed parentage, we celebrate and put up all sorts of decor for festivals — Hari Raya Aidilfitiri, Gawai Dayak, Christmas, and Chinese New Year —&nbsp;especially for our grocery store.</p>
<p>&#8220;I anticipated that this would bring joy to my customers, regardless of the different ethnicities and cultural celebrations,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>He also told <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.theborneopost.com/2024/02/05/muslim-shop-owner-continues-tradition-of-putting-up-cny-deco-at-premises/">The Borneo Post</a> that without the decorations and celebrations, customer turnout would be noticeably lower.</p>

<p>At last weekend&#8217;s New Year&#8217;s Eve celebration along the waterfront in Kuching, Sarawak, Abang Johari said unlike the national flag, <i></i>Jalur Gemilang<i></i>, the Sarawak state flag did not have a distinct name.</p>
<p>The name Ibu Pertiwi, he added, aligned well with the state&#8217;s anthem, <i>Ibu Pertiwiku.</i><i></i></p>
<p>&#8220;Ibu Pertiwi signifies the sovereignty of Sarawak; the red, black and yellow colours (of the flag) also represent the greatness of the state,&#8221; <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2024/01/01/sarawak-flag-now-known-as-ibu-pertiwi/">FMT</a> quoted him as saying.</p>
<p>&#8220;All Sarawakians must be determined to work hard to defend the motherland and take this state to greater heights together,&#8221; he added.</p>

<p>According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.bernama.com/bm/news.php?id=2258741">Bernama</a>, the square housing the flagpole has also been officially designated as&nbsp;Dataran Ibu Pertiwi.<i><br /></i><br />The Sarawak premier revealed that the construction costs for the square, located near the State Legislative Assembly and Kuching Waterfront, were sponsored by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS), and Shell as part of their corporate social responsibility.</p>
<p>&#8220;We will also show the history of all three oil companies (Petros, PETRONAS, and Shell) in this square, as well as provide information on the background of Sarawak&#8217;s economic development,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Abang Johari also expressed hope that the area would evolve into a new attraction for tourists exploring Kuching.</p>
<p>&#8220;Here, there is also a restaurant that can provide facilities for tourists to dine and enjoy the scenery,&#8221; he added.<i><br /></i></p>
