<p>Menerusi laporan <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.bharian.com.my/berita/nasional/2024/02/1214018/warga-asing-tak-bayar-bil-hospital-rm100-juta">Berita Harian</a>, sumber daripada KKM memberitahu angka terbaru menunjukkan sehingga akhir 2023, jumlah tunggakan membabitkan bil rawatan warga asing mencecah kira-kira RM100 juta.<br /><i><br />&#8220;Bila sebut warga asing, ia termasuk mereka berstatus pelarian, sama ada berdaftar atau tidak berdaftar serta pendatang asing tanpa izin yang mendapatkan rawatan di fasiliti kesihatan awam.<br /></i><i><br />&#8220;Rawatan terpaksa diberikan kepada warga asing atas dasar hak asasi manusia dan simpati, walaupun status mereka dicurigai atau mereka ini PATI sekali pun.<br /></i><i><br />&#8220;Meskipun mereka sudah mendaftar dengan kita dan ada membayar deposit terlebih dahulu, akhirnya mereka lolos juga kerana enggan membayar tunggakan bil rawatan yang mungkin melebihi jangkaan mereka.<br /></i><i><br />&#8220;Antara alasan yang sering gunakan adalah tiada duit, janji nak bayar kemudian dan ada juga hilang begitu sahaja,&#8221;</i><i></i> katanya.</p>
<p>Dalam pada itu, Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan, Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, ketika dihubungi mengesahkan jumlah tunggakan itu dan berkata pihaknya akan mengeluarkan kenyataan berhubung isu berkenaan.</p>
<p>Beliau berkata pihak pengurusan dan teknikal KKM sedang mengadakan perbincangan mengenai isu terbabit.﻿</p>

<p><p>Tindakan untuk menyenarai hitam warga asing yang dikesan culas melangsaikan hutang bil perubatan kerajaan berdepan kesukaran apabila apabila tiada sistem bersepadu menghubungkan data Kementerian Kesihatan (KKM) dengan Jabatan Imigresen ketika ini.</p>
<p>Sumber imigresen mendedahkan, pihaknya hanya bergantung kepada permohonan daripada KKM sekiranya kementerian itu mahu menyenarai hitam warga asing berkenaan.</p>
<p>Pihak imigresen juga jarang menerima permohonan daripada KKM untuk menyenarai hitam warga asing yang mempunyai tunggakan bil perubatan hospital kerajaan.</p>
<p>Situasi itu membuatkan imigresen tidak dapat mengambil tindakan lanjut termasuk menyekat mereka daripada pulang ke negara masing-masing.</p>
<p><i>&#8220;Sistem imigresen memang tidak ada link (tidak menghubungkan) dengan status bil hospital kerajaan. Sebenarnya, kalau diikutkan, pihak hospital atau KKM sendiri yang akan mohon dengan kita untuk menyenarai hitam warga asing yang gagal bayar tunggakan bil rawatan. Ia bukan automatik.</i></p>
<p><i>&#8220;Ia sama dengan kes mengelak cukai pendapatan. Kita tak ada sistem untuk periksa berapa hutang mereka. Hanya untuk senarai hitam, itu pun kalau ada permintaan dari agensi atau kementerian berkenaan,&#8221;</i> katanya.</p>

<p>Namun, individu tidak bertanggungjawab tersebut tidak memunculkan diri walaupun wanita berkenaan sudah berkali-kali membuat panggilan telefon tetapi tidak berjawab.</p>
<p>Wanita terbabit kemudiannya&nbsp;meninggalkan nota menunjukkan rasa kecewanya terhadap perkara itu.</p>

<p><p>According to the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/crime-courts/2024/02/1008387/hospital-staff-leaves-behind-daughter-car-five-year-old-girl-dies">New Straits Times</a>, Shah Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the police were informed of the incident by a medical officer at the hospital at 8pm the same day.</p>
<p>He said preliminary investigations found that the victim was left by her mother in the car by accident, after she was picked up from a nearby daycare centre at about 2pm.</p>
<p>&#8220;The victim was asleep in the car and the engine was turned off. The 34-year-old mother, who is also a hospital staff, only realised that she had left the child behind after her husband contacted her at 6pm.</p>
<p>&#8220;The unconscious victim was then taken to the hospital&#8217;s Emergency Department and efforts to resuscitate her failed. She was confirmed dead by the medical officers there,&#8221; Mohd Iqbal said in a statement today, 1 February.</p>

<p>&#8220;We advise the public to be more careful after fetching their children from school or daycare centres to prevent accidentally leaving them in vehicles,&#8221; added Mohd Iqbal.</p>
<p>He urged anyone with information on the case to contact investigating officer Insp Syer Aidid at +6013-6544996.</p>

<p><b>&#8211; Leksell Gamma Knife Icon:</b> A non-invasive, clinically proven radiosurgery for skull and brain conditions, preserving normal brain function with sophisticated radiation using stereotactic radiation (SRS). </p>
<p><b>&#8211; Radixact-X9 Tomotherapy:</b> A customised radiation treatment that delivers a high dose to tumours, while minimising damage to healthy tissue. It is capable of automatically adapting to the treatment, and identifying the need to improve the precision of the treatment. </p>
<p><b>&#8211; Flexitron Brachytherapy:</b> It delivers a higher radiation dose to a smaller area in less time than conventional external beam radiation therapy. </p>
<p><b>&#8211; Intrabeam Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT):</b> It uses concentrated radiation during surgery to give a dose equivalent to five traditional treatments in a single session, preserving tissue and reducing side effects.</p>

<p>To meet the demand of increased patient capacity, SMC also equipped its cancer centre with four bunkers that are fitted with two Varian TrueBeam machines, a Leksell Gamma Knife Icon equipment, a TomoTherapy machine, brachytherapy equipment, and IORT equipment to meet the demands of increased patient capacity.</p>
<p>Its nuclear medicine department also houses two PET/CT scanners and one SPECT-CT scanner. </p>
<p>These machines play a vital role in supporting the diagnosis and monitoring cancer treatments using radiopharmaceuticals.</p>

<p>Dr Heng said, &#8220;Breakthroughs in treating challenging cancers such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma highlight our commitment to pushing the boundaries of all cancer care. </p>
<p>&#8220;Our clinical trials, continuous research, and dedication to innovation and personalised care contribute to these advancements in the field.&#8221;</p>
<p>Calise Teo, a cancer patient at SMC, thought that all hope was lost when she received news that she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. She consulted numerous oncologists in different hospitals before deciding to receive treatment from SMC clinical oncologist Dr John Low. </p>
<p>&#8220;By the time I began my treatment, my cancer cells had covered my entire spine, which left me wheel-chair bound,&#8221; she said.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If she had not sought immediate treatment, she would have lost control of her arms and become semi-paralysed. Thanks to the advanced combination treatment of targeted therapy and chemotherapy, as well as supportive palliative care at SMC, Teo was able to clear the cancer cells from her body. </p>
<p>While Teo is still undergoing treatment at SMC, she has since regained her mobility and returned to her usual daily activities. </p>
<p>&#8220;I am very thankful that I am able to be here today to share my story,&#8221; said Teo.</p>

<h2>A man was amazed to discover that he only had to pay RM258 for his wife&#8217;s brain surgery and 26-day stay at a government hospital</h2>

<p><p>In a post, Facebook user <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/leevihua/posts/10161411479685984">Lee Vi Hua</a> shared relief and gratefulness﻿ for his wife&#8217;s successful surgery and the surprisingly low cost of her hospitalisation.</p>
<p>&#8220;It felt like the longest 26 days of our lives,&#8221; he wrote about the ordeal.</p>
<p>Lee shared that his wife had suddenly experienced a splitting headache at home on 15 December. He rushed her to a local clinic, where she was given painkillers and then sent home.</p>
<p>However, when her headache persisted into the night, they decided to go to a private hospital, where a CT scan was done. <b>The doctor told them that</b> <b>she was bleeding in the brain, caused by a ruptured blood vessel.</b></p>
<p>&#8220;She had a ruptured aneurysm at the back of the brain, and the bleeding was causing her severe headache. Fortunately, the affected area was not much, so she did not have a stroke or any paralysis,&#8221; Lee said.</p>

<p><p>However, the treatment was only available at one private hospital or the general hospital, Sultanah Aminah Hospital, in Johor Bahru.</p>
<p>&#8220;<b>We chose to do the surgery at the private hospital, which was estimated to cost RM150,000&#8230;</b>&nbsp;Even though my wife had insurance, I was still secretly frightened by the cost,&#8221; he divulged.</p>
<p>However, Lee said circumstances changed when his wife tested positive for COVID-19 on 17 December, requiring her to be admitted to a government hospital.</p>
<p>According to Lee, it was a regulation by the Health Ministry, and thus, they had no choice but to also continue the treatment for her brain aneurysm there.</p>
<p>Lee said the next two weeks were a challenge, as his wife had to be admitted alone in a COVID-19 isolation ward, while they waited for a consultation by the public hospital&#8217;s neurosurgeon, who was on vacation.</p>

<p><p>&#8220;Finally, after 26 days of hardship, it was coming to an end. And guess how much was the final bill that I had to pay? <b>For food and accommodation for three weeks, and the best team of doctors who saved my wife&#8217;s life?</b>&#8221; he wrote on Facebook expressing gratitude.</p>
<p>&#8220;<b>The answer is RM258! Malaysia truly has the most compassionate healthcare system in the world.</b> If we were at a private hospital, the price would have cost a thousand times more!&#8221; he exclaimed.</p>

<h2>Tuaran Hospital in Sabah is under scrutiny for allegedly misdiagnosing a patient, leading to his death</h2>

<p>On 29 December last year, an 18-year-old patient died due to an alleged misdiagnosis at Tuaran Hospital.</p>
<p>Tuaran member of parliament (MP) Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.bharian.com.my/berita/nasional/2024/01/1195275/remaja-meninggal-dunia-selepas-hospital-tuaran-gagal-kenal-pasti">stated</a> that the patient sought treatment at the hospital for a high fever on 25 December, but the hospital sent the patient home.</p>
<p>&#8220;However, on 28 December, the teenager&#8217;s family brought him to the hospital again because his fever did not subside,&#8221; he said, adding that the doctors at the hospital sent the patient home after determining that his situation was not severe.</p>
<p>The teenager&#8217;s family took him to Tuaran Hospital for the third time on 29 December after he experienced bleeding.</p>
<p>Tangau <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.bharian.com.my/berita/nasional/2024/01/1195275/remaja-meninggal-dunia-selepas-hospital-tuaran-gagal-kenal-pasti">shared</a> that Tuaran Hospital then referred the patient to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where doctors discovered that the patient had contracted severe dengue fever.</p>
<p>The patient, Aidil @ Erjuand Christian, died in the Intensive Care Unit on the same day.</p>

<p>JKNS director Datuk Dr Asits Sanna said the department was deeply concerned about the death of the teenager from dengue fever, allegedly due to a misdiagnosis at Tuaran Hospital.</p>
<p>He stated that a comprehensive and transparent investigation  was underway to identify corrective measures that could enhance the quality of healthcare services for the people of Sabah.</p>
<p>&#8220;Currently, the hospital has four specialists on duty, including a general practitioner, two pediatric specialists, and an emergency medicine specialist,&#8221; he said in a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/nst-viral/2024/01/996650/nstviralsabah-health-take-corrective-action-following-boy-died-late" title="Link: https://www.nst.com.my/news/nst-viral/2024/01/996650/nstviralsabah-health-take-corrective-action-following-boy-died-late">statement</a> yesterday, 2 January.</p>
<p>In August last year, Tuaran Hospital was accused of failing to provide proper treatment to another patient, who was taken to the hospital after suffering a fall. The medical staff on duty, however, found no serious injuries and sent the patient home, resulting in her death, according ﻿to <a href="https://www.bernama.com/en/news.php?id=2212083">Bernama</a>.</p>
