<p>Page and Brin built a search engine that used links to determine the importance of individual pages on the World Wide Web. They called this search engine <b>Backrub</b>&nbsp;as a nod to its analysis of the web&#8217;s &#8220;back links&#8221;, according to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://about.google/intl/ALL_my/our-story/">Google</a>.</p>
<p>According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://graphics.stanford.edu/~dk/google_name_origin.html#:~:text=In%201996%2C%20Larry%20Page%20and,Tamara%20Munzner%2C%20and%20Lucas%20Pereira.">Stanford&#8217;s David Koeller</a>, about a year after Backrub was launched, Page and his colleagues began brainstorming potential new names for the search engine technology, focusing on names that related to the indexing of immense amounts of data.</p>

<p>The name was a play on the mathematical expression for the number &#8220;1&#8221; followed by 100 zeros, and reflecting Page and Brin&#8217;s mission to organise the world&#8217;s information and make it universally accessible and useful.</p>

<p>Page liked the new name and registered the domain name for himself and Brin on 15 September 1997.</p>
<p>And the rest is pretty much history. </p>
<p>Without these name changes, we might have found ourselves saying, &#8220;Let&#8217;s Backrub how to give back rubs!&#8221; 😛</p>

<h2>We&#8217;re familiar with the concept of different time zones worldwide, but did you know that Malaysia had <em>two</em> separate time zones in the past?</h2>

<p><p>But first, we&#8217;ll have to understand a bit about how time zones work.</p>
<p>While the range of time zones was previously called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), it is now referred to as Coordinated Universal Time or Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). The different time zones are all abbreviated as UTC, with a + or &#8211; symbol and a number indicating how many hours ahead or behind it is from the universal time of UTC+0.</p>
<p>For example, Malaysia&#8217;s time zone is called Malaysian Standard Time, which is eight hours ahead of UTC+0.</p>
<p>So, Malaysia is under the UTC+8 time zone, as is Singapore, Brunei, and Hong Kong, as well as some parts of Indonesia and Australia.</p>

<p><p>When British North Borneo (now Sabah) and Sarawak were under British rule, they operated on a different time zone from Peninsular Malaysia. <b>Back then, East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) was 30 minutes ahead of Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia).&nbsp;</b></p>
<p>This time difference had negative impacts on work hours in both sides of Malaysia. Yet, the practice continued until 1981.</p>

<p><p>Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was prime minister at the time, introduced the Malaysian Standard Time Act in 1981, which required advancing the clocks by 30 minutes at 11.30pm on 31 December 1981 to follow East Malaysia. Consequently, New Year&#8217;s celebrations commenced earlier than usual that year.</p>
<p>This move aimed to simplify administration and facilitate communication and coordination between different regions of the country. Singapore followed suit the same day.</p>
<p>According to Tun Mahathir, <b>East Malaysian time was chosen because it was more in line with international practice</b>, where the difference between time zones was one full hour rather than 30 minutes.</p>
<p>This is why Malaysia and Singapore are one hour ahead of Thailand, despite roughly being on the same longitude.</p>

<p>Other Malaysians argue that being on UTC+7 would better match the country&#8217;s natural daylight hours, leading to increased productivity and improved work-life balance. This alignment could enhance energy efficiency and contribute to overall well-being (and better sleep!).</p>
<p>This is because being in the UTC+8 time zone means that those who live in Peninsular Malaysia start their mornings later than the rest of the countries within the blue section of the time zone map shown earlier. </p>
<p>So, if you live in Peninsular Malaysia, your natural body clock is out of sync with the sunrise, which is why switching to UTC+7 could lead to better sleep.</p>

<p><b>Whether your pet hamster actually does this or not depends on the temperature you maintain in your home. </b></p>
<p>Veterinary nurse Leah Feusse told <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.thedodo.com/dodowell/do-hamsters-hibernate">The Dodo</a>, &#8220;Pet hamsters will begin &#8216;hibernating&#8217; if the temperature of their habitat drops below 65ºF (18ºC) for more than 24 hours.&#8221;</p>
<p>For the most part, &#8220;<b>pet hamsters don&#8217;t usually hibernate</b> when they&#8217;re used to living in comfortable temperatures that don&#8217;t change much,&#8221; according to The Dodo.</p>
<p>In other words,<b> it&#8217;s </b><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://woodgreen.org.uk/pet-advice/hamster/do-hamsters-hibernate-and-what-is-torpor/"><b>dangerous for your pet</b></a><b> hamster to &#8216;hibernate&#8217;</b>, or to use the more correct term — torpor. </p>
<p>Torpor is an involuntary state of reduced mental or motor activity. It&#8217;s&nbsp;a survival tactic automatically triggered when an animal gets too cold or has limited access to food and water.<b></b></p>

<p>I. Observe it closely for signs of life — these may include minor twitching, a gentle jerk or tremble, or slowed-down breathing</h2>

<p>Despite appearing motionless and &#8216;dead&#8217;, hamsters in a torpid state usually exhibit signs of life. You can lightly stroke their paw or whiskers, which might elicit a response. Watch their chest or abdomen closely for signs of breathing. </p>
<p>&#8220;When &#8216;hibernating&#8217;, <b>a hamster can slow their breathing down to only one breath every two minutes, so be patient.</b> You can also feel their ribcage, just above their elbows, for a heartbeat,&#8221; Feusse&nbsp;explains.</p>

<p>Touch your hamster gently to check if it is a tiny bit warm. Dead hamsters will be stone cold. (<i>Hooey was found stone cold, so I guess it was his time to go after all. RIP, Hooey. T.T &lt;3</i>).<b></b></p>

<p><b><u>Do this as a last resort</u> </b>if you really can&#8217;t tell if your hamster is dead or in a torpid state, as <b><u>moving your hamster could cause it stress or harm its health</u></b>.</p>
<p>If you pick it up in a torpid state, its body will be limp. On the other hand, a deceased hamster will be completely stiff as it undergoes rigor mortis, a process where the muscles and joints stiffen after a couple of hours of death.</p>
<p><b>Make sure that you handle this step with care and sensitivity</b>, as the health of your hamster should be your number one priority.</p>

<p><b>In a domestic situation, your pet hamster <u>should only be in torpor for 24 hours.</u></b> <b>Anything longer may lead to your pet&#8217;s starvation or dehydration. </b>That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to closely monitor your hamster&#8217;s needs.</p>
<p>One way to safely revive your pet is to increase the temperature of its environment with body warmth. According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://petsvills.com/do-hamsters-hibernate/">Pets Vills</a>, you can do this by gently picking up your hamster and holding it close to your body for warmth for 30 minutes. </p>
<p>Alternatively, you can use a hot water bottle filled with hot water (not boiling). Wrap it in a towel or cloth and place it near your pet to transfer heat.&nbsp;</p>
