After 'Pendatang' Success, Kuman Pictures Holds Screenwriting Contest For Next Big Hit

The local film studio that recently released Pendatang is now looking for a new screenplay to shoot in 2025

In a Facebook post last Friday, 5 January, Kuman Pictures announced that they are holding a screenwriting competition for an original horror/thriller screenplay set in Malaysia.

The contest is open to writers of any age, nationality, or level of experience, allowing anyone to participate.

In collaboration with production house Red Communications, they are looking for screenplays written in either Bahasa Melayu or English, with a preferred length ranging from 70 to 100 pages.

"The story must be in the horror or thriller genre. Not all horror movies need ghosts and not all thrillers need killings," states one of the terms written in the post.

Kuman Pictures added that, while there may be a shortlist, selected as the winner, earning RM20,000 and 1% of the film's income across all platforms once it is produced

For context, no other film company in Malaysia gives provides royalties to their scriptwriters after production.

The film studio, founded by filmmaker Amir Muhammad and dedicated to low-budget thriller and horror projects, also said it pledges to shoot the winning screenplay in 2025.

The project will be directed by Khairi Anwar, known for his work on the controversial film, Mentega Terbang.

The closing date to submit a screenplay is 30 May, and the winner will be announced in August this year
