<h2>Six bright secondary school students did Malaysia proud by winning one silver and five bronze medals at the 16th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2019 in Doha, Qatar this month</h2>

<p>According to their <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.ijsoweb.org/">website</a>, the IJSO is among 12 recognised International Science Olympiads held annually for students who are under 16 years old.</p>
<p>It aims to promote the pursuit of excellence in scientific endeavours and encourage gifted students to further develop their talents in Natural Sciences.</p>
<p>The competition this year saw the participation of 409 secondary school students from over 70 countries, reported <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2019/12/20/teenagers-make-malaysia-proud">the Star</a>. It was organised by Qatar&#8217;s Ministry of Education and Higher Education, in collaboration with Qatar University.</p>

<p>According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.majalahsains.com/kejayaan-pasukan-kebangsaan-dalam-pertandingan-international-junior-science-olympiad-ijso-2019/">Majalah Sains</a>, 104 gold medal winners from the preliminary Kancil Science Competition were then selected to compete in the Malaysian Junior Science Olympiad (MyJSO) that was held at the International Islamic Unversity of Malaysia (UIAM) on 20 July.</p>

<p>The students were <b>Amelia Jade Mae-Xian Lim</b> (Wesley Methodist School), <b>Chin Jia Yao</b> (Chong Hwa Independent High School), <b>Tay Yi Cong</b> (Chong Hwa Independent High School), <b>Haris Dani Erwin Dani</b> (PERMATApintar National Gifted Centre),<b> Imran Adham Azmin</b> (PERMATApintar National Gifted Centre), and<b> Lai Bo Wei</b> (SMJK Chung Ling).</p>
<p>The 15-year-olds were accompanied by Anis Shahira Hadith and Nur Fadhilah Mokhrizal of Ardent Educational Consultants Sdn Bhd.</p>

<p><b>&#8220;I was really proud of the Malaysian team because everyone won a medal,&#8221;</b> Lim told The Star, making national history with every participant managing to bring a medal home.</p>
<p>Last year, the first time Malaysia took part in the competition, only one out of six national representatives won a medal.</p>

<p><p>According to their <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://wccmalaysia.my/about.php" title="Link: https://wccmalaysia.my/about.php">website</a>, the cooking competition &#8211; which was held at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Alor Setar &#8211; aims to act as a cultural bridge between Kedah and the world, as well as to be a platform for chefs globally to share their experiences with each other.</p>
<p>There were over 80 categories to compete in, ranging from baking confectionery and patisseries to dishing out Malay, Chinese, or Japanese cuisine.</p>

<p>According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2019/12/548586/boy-13-wins-2-bronze-medals-world-chefs-championships">New Straits Times</a>, he also won the Jury Award for being a promising young participant.</p>
<p>The SMK Syed Mohamed Al-Bukhary student said he felt calm competing against the more experienced participants around the world.</p>
<p>He had not expected to be announced a bronze medallist for the two categories, but this has given him a boost to continue dabbling in cooking.</p>

<p>&#8220;Actually I have never cooked before. I have only assisted him when he does cooking demonstrations. <p>&#8220;My father taught me how to handle the equipment and cooking basics focused on the categories that I was entering.&#8221;</p>

<p>His father, Khairil Anuar Hisham Mahmud, who has 18 years of experience as a chef, said he would continue to help his eldest son improve his culinary knowledge and skills.</p>
<p><b>&#8220;There were tears in my eyes watching him in the kitchen. I did not think he would so calmly follow whatever I taught him,</b>&#8221; he said, &#8220;Experience is gold, so I hope he can master this art.&#8221;</p>
<p>Khairil, who works as a culinary lecturer at an academy in Malaysia, however, said he would not force Syahzan to follow in his footsteps.</p>
<p>&#8220;I hope he can pick up and master the skill as much as possible.<b> But if he decides to pursue his dream to become an engineer, I will support him too.&#8221;</b></p>

<p>&#8220;It was a very tough time for me and full of stress in the period of preparation. Glad that I made it and I feel so happy. To all the people who supported me, I&#8217;m happy that I didn&#8217;t disappoint you all.&#8221;</p>

<p>He has even launched his own brand of milk pitchers called &#8216;Nasty Jug&#8217;.</p>

<p>He also said that once the defence is made, there is a possibility for the fine to increase or decrease.</p>

<p>23-year-old graphic designer <b>Alfred Phua Hong Fook</b>&#8216;s design beat hundreds of entries submitted for a <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://says.com/my/news/tourism-ministry-is-organising-a-contest-for-a-brand-new-visit-malaysia-2020-logo">logo competition</a>, which was held earlier this year to find a replacement for the old logo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The voting goes on for months and ends with a main event that is held in a different city each year, where fans can meet with the yuru-kyaras and cast votes for them. A vote during the final event is worth three times the amount of an online vote.</p>

<p><b>Konyudo-kun</b>, the white ghoul boy-looking mascot for the Mie Prefecture in Yokkaichi, took an early lead in the competition with 1.18 million online votes &#8211; which was the tip-off for event officials that something was wrong.</p>
<p>Turns out, according to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2018/11/19/entertainment-news/saitama-citys-kaparu-beats-organized-voting-win-grand-prix-title-annual-mascot-contest/#.W_YuOpMzZTZ">The Japan Times<b></b></a>, the&nbsp;<b>Yokkaichi municipal government had created and distributed over 10,000 voting IDs to its 4,000 staff, resulting in multiple votes per person.</b> Event officials eventually purged the record of 300,000 votes.<b></p>
<p></b><b>Jabow</b> and another mascot, <b>Inunakin</b> from Izumsano in Osaka Prefecture, also had repeated votes culled from the records.<b><br /></b></p>

<p>Kaparu, who is inspired by the Japanese water goblin or &#8220;kappa&#8221;, was a last minute entry.</p>
<p>This was to be its last entry into the Grand Prix, after six tries. Last year, Kaparu ended up in 11th place which was its best ranking yet.</p>
<p>&#8220;Only five staff members and some part-timers took charge (of Kaparu&#8217;s election campaign),&#8221; said Hanako Gondawara of the Shiki Culture and Sports Promotion Corporation told The Japan Times.</p>
<p><b>&#8220;Because we could not rely on organised votes, I never imagined we could win.&#8221;</b></p>

<p><b>Kumamon</b> is the mascot for Japan&#8217;s Kumamoto Prefecture local government. It was created in 2010 and has since gained a huge following across the globe.</p>
<p>The mascot is so savvy that it has a presence on <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://twitter.com/55_kumamon">Twitter</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.instagram.com/55_kumamontai/">Instagram</a>, and now, <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/08/22/national/iconic-japanese-mascot-kumamon-become-youtuber/#.W_Uv4JMzZTZ">YouTube</a>.&nbsp;</p>
