The investigation into the attack at the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor Bahru this morning, 17 May, now involves two university students who were present during the incident

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the two students, a male, aged 22, and a female, aged 21, were detained for their suspected involvement in the attack in which two policemen were killed.

“They were detained for further investigation in connection with the attack,” he said, explaining that it made no sense for them to lodge a report at 2.30am for an alleged molestation case that happened two years ago.

Razaruddin noted that while the students were filing the report, the suspect arrived at the police station on a motorcycle and proceeded to the back of the station, where he killed an officer and stole his gun.

The suspect has now been identified as Radin Romyullah Radin Imran.

The IGP said that he is not ruling out the possibility that the two university students were decoys planted by the 34-year-old suspect

Radin, believed to have been a member of the terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), was prepared in advance for the attack as he had a bag reinforced with objects including metal sheets, a piece of zinc, papers, and cloths stuffed in it. The IGP said this was believed to be used as a body shield.

“The suspect’s motive appears to involve acquiring firearms, although the exact agenda remains unclear. It seems that the suspect might have come to obtain firearms for that agenda,” Razaruddin said.

Meanwhile, police have arrested 20 people believed to be members of JI in the outskirts of Johor in follow-up raids following the attack

The 20 suspected JI members rounded up include Radin’s five family members, who lived at Kampung Sungai Tiram Ulu, located just metres away from the station, reported the New Straits Times.
